Not every career change starts with a dramatic moment. Sometimes, it’s the little things that tell us something needs to shift.
We often think about changing jobs when something significant happens. Perhaps we’ve been overlooked for a promotion, experienced a difficult period at work or simply reached the point where we know it’s time to move on.
But in reality, the signs that we’re ready for something different can be far more subtle.
It’s easy to become comfortable in a role, particularly when you’ve been with an organisation for some time. You know the people, understand the processes and can confidently navigate your working day. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!
But sometimes, comfortable can become a little too comfortable.
So, how do you recognise when it might be time to take stock of your career?
1. You’re no longer feeling challenged
Think back to when you first started your role. Perhaps there were new systems to learn, responsibilities to take on or opportunities to develop your skills.
If those opportunities have gradually disappeared and your working days have become increasingly predictable, it might be worth asking yourself whether you’re still growing professionally.
2. You can’t see a clear path forward
Career progression doesn’t always mean climbing the management ladder. For some people, it’s about developing specialist knowledge, gaining greater responsibility or having the opportunity to contribute in different ways.
But if you’ve reached a point where you can’t see what comes next, it may be time to explore what other opportunities could offer.
3. The enthusiasm you once had has started to fade
Everyone experiences the occasional difficult Monday or challenging week. That’s perfectly normal!
But if you’re consistently feeling less motivated, struggling to find enjoyment in your work or simply going through the motions, it could be a sign that something needs to change.
4. Your priorities have changed, but your role hasn’t
What mattered to you professionally five years ago might look very different today.
Perhaps flexibility has become more important, you’re looking for greater stability or you want a role that offers more variety and responsibility.
As our lives evolve, it’s only natural that our career priorities evolve too. The question is whether your current role still reflects what matters most to you.
5. You keep wondering what else might be out there
You might not be actively searching for a new job, but perhaps you’ve found yourself reading the occasional vacancy, wondering what other businesses are offering or thinking about the direction you’d like your career to take.
Sometimes, that curiosity is worth paying attention to.
So, what should you do next?
Recognising these signs doesn’t mean you need to update your CV tonight and hand in your notice tomorrow.
In fact, sometimes the best next step is simply having an honest conversation with yourself about what you want from your career.
Could you find those opportunities within your current organisation? Is there a conversation you could have with your manager? Or might exploring the wider market help you understand what’s possible?
At Simkiss Recruitment Solutions, we believe that the best career decisions are informed ones, and you don’t need to be actively looking for a new role to start thinking about your future.
Because sometimes, the first step towards your next chapter is simply recognising that you’re ready for one.
